Farah Blogs - To the Sudanese Women.

Reading about further efforts towards peace in Darfur makes me eager to believe that there will finally be hope. People have suffered so much and I genuinely hope their suffering is coming to an end. Because of the war in Darfur, more than 2 million people lost their homes, over 300,000 have been killed, and countless women and young girls have been brutally raped and beaten. Rape is used as a weapon of war.

In 2005, I wrote a song dedicated to the women of Darfur, “To the Sudanese Women.” I wanted to sing directly to them in Arabic, a language they understand. I wanted to tell them that they have not been forgotten. I thought of all those women in Darfur living in horrible conditions, many of whom have lost their husbands as a result of the violence; petrified that at any moment, they’ll lose whatever family members they still have left or that they or their daughters could get raped. That is a horrifying reality. I wanted to send them the message that despite carrying the cultural shame of having been raped, they are still strong and beautiful, and not alone. They are in our thoughts and prayers. When I was living in Boston, there was a whole community dedicated to ending the genocide in Darfur. Very often, I performed at rallies and candlelight vigils. Being on the other side of the world, taking a stand for the people of Darfur. I never imagined they would hear my voice.

One of the most emotional moments of my career was when I heard the reaction of these women to my song. Linda Mason, the founder of Bright Horizons, was passionate about bringing peace to Darfur. She visited displacement camps there, along with Liz Walker, news anchor for Boston CBS-4; and activist Rev. Dr. Gloria White Hammond. All three took with them a laptop, which they used to play my song, “To the Sudanese Women,” as well as Andrea Whaley's song, “We are all connected” to the women in the camps. Because the song was in Arabic, they could understand the lyrics and know that it was written specifically for them. Linda told me that, after hearing the music, the women cried. That they had said they never realized the outside world was aware of their constant struggle. They thought no one knew or cared.

How were they to know?

In Linda's words, “When the songs were over, one woman expressed what the others were feeling: ‘We feel so ashamed. We are dirty and poor. We have no shoes; our clothes are ripped. But when we hear you singing, you have captured our emotions to the utmost. We no longer feel ashamed.’"

In gratitude, the women in the camp responded with their own musical gift. Linda brought back audio recording of them singing, dancing, and clapping. Seeing and hearing this lively response to my song filled me with emotion and taught me several important life lessons: one person really can make a difference, each individual effort has value, and music is one of the most powerful forms of healing in existence. Of all the songs I have written, this song has always been people's favorite. My song, “To the Sudanese Women” was played at a United Nations Security Council meeting where they officially agreed to consider the war in Darfur genocide.

Help the women of Darfur by contributing through music “To the Sudanese Women is available on the compilation of “We Are All Connected”. iTunes or Amazon
